on Road 191 in the town of Rio Grande, the 28,000 acre El Yunque
Caribbean National forest is the only rain forest within the
U.S. National Forest System. El Yunque, named after the good
Taino spirit
Yukiyu, receives over 100 billions gallons of annual rainfall
and harbors 240 tree species. The forest is verdant with feathery
ferns,
ropelike vines and exotic flora, all thriving under the leafy canopy
of trees.
Vivid impatiens line the banks of cascading waterfalls, such
as
La Coca and La Mina. Rivers and trickling streams collect into gentle
pools
of rainwater as millions of tiny inch-long tree frogs called coquis,
found only in Puerto Rico, sing their sweet lullabies.
Also a bird sanctuary, El Yunque is the home of our rare Puerto
Rican Parrot.

Arecibo is home to the Arecibo Observatory, featuring
the world’s largest
radar/radio telescope. A 20-acre radar dish, with a 600-ton suspended
platform
hovering over it, sits in an impressive 565-foot deep sinkhole.
Operated by Cornell University, the telescope probes the ionosphere,
examines planets and monitors natural radio emissions
from distant galaxies, pulsars and quasars… all from Arecibo.

On
a high hill overlooking the city of Ponce is the Serralles Castle,
once the baronial estate of one of Puerto Rico’s most powerful rum-producing
families.
It is not really a castle, Ponceños gave it that name because its
elegant towers,
graceful arches, long galleries and landscaped terraces suggest a
medieval castle.
Its rooms now delight visitors with their preservation of an elegant
era.
An
unforgettable experience for the lover of fine art.
Like a jewel on an elegant lady, the Ponce Museum of Art graces
this serene southern city. The Art Museum holds over 3,000 pieces,
from the European and American schools ranging from the fourteenth
century.
The Museum’s collection is known worldwide for the superb
selection of Italian
Baroque and British Pre- Raphaelite works as well as
French Academy and seventeenth century Spanish (Golden Age) schools.
